Day 1: Ashwin and Clarke take opening day honours

Harbhajan Singh finally got his 100th cap for India whereas the 23-year old B.Kumar made his test debut alongside the Aussie debutant M.Henriques for Australia with a poised outing on Day 1 of the 1st test in Chennai.India vs Australia Day -1

Winning the coin contour and batting, Australia were off to a brisk start with Ed Cowan (29) and Warner (59) taking Aussies to 50 in the 10th over. Ishant and B.Kumar were well seen off by the openers. Cowan was Ashwin and India’s first break following Hughes (6) giving India a double dossier. At Lunch, with 34 overs bowled Warner and Watson guided Australia to 126 for 2.

Early afternoon, the first over after Lunch saw the back of Watson (28) who was lbw to Ashwin. A flat and fuller trajectory by Ashwin in his next over meant Australia’s opener Warner’s way back to the dressing room. Wade and skipper Clarke were new and fresh on the wicket that was dry and started to spin. In the 47th over of the innings, Ashwin got his and the 5th Aussie wicket to dismiss Wade for 12, Australia 153 for 5. Debutant Henriques stepped in and partnered with Clarke. Just before Tea, Umpire Dharamasena erred a decision against India and Clarke survived, Aussies 215 for 5.

Day’s last session, MH’s (M.Henriques and M.Clarke) dominated the Indian bowling and took Australia to a safer score. Henriques reached his debut fifty whereas skipper Clarke confessed his love of playing against India, scoring another ton against India. In the 90th over of the day after all the hard work, Henriques (68) played across the line to give his wicket to Ashwin again. 5 balls later, Jadeja got his 1st wicket as Starc was wrapped up for 3. On a day that saw 95 overs bowled, Clarke stayed unbeaten on 103 with Siddle on 1*. Australia 316 for 7.
