Sri Lankan cricket has been in news every now-and-then courtesy disturbances at the on-field talent as well as the management level too, some shuffles and announcements again raised some ears 3 weeks before Bangladesh visit Sri Lanka for 2 tests, 3 ODI’s and a T20 to be played all March.
Angelo Matthews takes over the captaincy for Test and ODI from Mahela Jayawardene whereas Dinesh Chandimal will lead the national team in the shortest version of the game apart from being a deputy to Angelo in tests and One Days. Lasith Malinga would be the vice-captain for the T20 squad. Though Jayawardene was expected to step down after the Aussie tour, the new announcements are for a period of 11 months.
Newly crowned skipper will lead the 20 man squad for 2 tests at home starting from 8th March at Galle. Thilan Samaraweera, opener Tharanga Paranavitana and wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene have been dropped from the team whereas Ajantha Mendis makes a comeback to the white uniform team. Batsmen Ashen Silva and Kithuruwan Vithanage, off spinner Tharindu Kaushal and seamer Dushmantha Chameera will have the first taste of cricket at the international level. Wicketkeeper-batsman Kushal J. Perera and leg spinning all-rounder Jeevan Mendis have played ODI cricket for Sri Lanka but not a Test. Also injured Sangakkara has been picked but his place in the playing 11 will be subject to his recovery from fractured hand.
At the managerial level, Marvan Atapattu takes over from Graham Ford as the squad’s Assistant Head Coach whereas Chaminda Vaas will nourish the fast bowlers filling in as the bowling coach for the Lankan team. The SLC also appointed Michael de Zoysa as the new team manager.
